Why Are You Down in the Dumps, Dear Soul?
Why Are You Crying the Blues?

I want to drink God,
          deep droughts of God.
I'm thirsty for God-alive.
I wonder, "Will I ever make it—
arrive and drink in God's presence?"
I'm on a diet of tears—
tears for breakfast, tears for supper.
               All day long...
--Psalm 42:1b-3a
It happens.  Many times before we even notice it has happened.  Our soul is down cast.  Joy dares are difficult to find.
Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul?
Why are you crying the blues?

--Psalm 42:5a
You are not a terrible mom.  You are not a failure as a Christian.
You are human.

My sister once told me:
"God doesn't expect a cat to be anything else but a cat, and He is not disappointed in that cat in the slightest when it behaves like a cat.  On the contrary, that creation has fulfilled its purpose without lack, just by being itself."

For without Me, you can do nothing.
John 15:5
This is NOT a reason to give up.
This is a reason to walk in the Lord's acceptance of you without perfection, just grace.
So then, how do we live the life as a follower of Christ?
  1. Intentionality.
  2. Belief in the empowerment of our Savior.

"Being intentional is super hard. Then again, really loving is also super hard. I want to do the hard things." -Sarah Mae

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13
"All things" means... all things.  Charles Simeon suggested that the, "all things," ought to be understood in terms of enduring all trials, mortifying all flesh, and fulfilling all duties.  The strength that Jesus gives is spiritual strength and the grace we need to accomplish God's word in our lives.
Endure.  Mortify.  Fulfill.

Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul?
Why are you crying the blues?
I fix my eyes on God—
          soon I'll be praising again.
He puts a smile on my face.
               He's my God.

When my soul is in the dumps, I rehearse

          everything I know of You.
God promises to love me all day,
sing songs all through the night!
               My life is God's prayer.

Sometimes I ask God, my rock-solid God,
"Why did you let me down?
Why am I walking around in tears?

Again, why are you down in the dumps, dear soul?
Why are you crying the blues?
I fix my eyes on God—
          soon I'll be praising again.
He puts a smile on my face.
               He's my God.

  1. A great post, there have been many times in my life where these very verses have been my mantra. It is through gracious prayers from friends and families and the power of God that I am lifted out of the mire.

  2. Lovely post! These are verses which I've clung to over the past few years... and had to remind myself that tears are but for a moment, joy comes in the morning...
